Cherry blossom season: decide when and where before you go

Last April 6th I walked Yeouido's Yunjung-ro for forty minutes. Later I flipped through the thirty-odd photos from that day, and in half of them the back of a stranger's head was bigger than the blossoms. My wife had one comment: "Is this actually flower viewing?"

I changed my approach after that. Places that are less known but don't lose on scenery. Here's a shortlist from a few years of going out and checking.

When do the 2026 blossoms open

Overlay the KMA forecasts with the last few years of bloom records and this year runs a few days ahead of last. The bloom dates have been creeping earlier each year.

Why some years come early and some come late

I used to think blooming was just weather luck. Turns out several conditions have to line up at once. If the winter runs too warm, the flower buds themselves come out weak. A sudden March warm-up pulls the bloom forward, and a run of clear days pulls it forward more. Rain needs to land in moderation — too much and the petals are gone within days of opening.

Four variables, one outcome. It blooms and drops inside a week or so. Which makes the whole thing a timing game.

Ten cherry blossom spots without the crowds

Not the ones that come up when you search "벚꽃명소" on Instagram — the ones locals actually go to. I've been to all of them myself.

1. Gapyeong, Gyeonggi — Bukhangang Rail Bridge

Ten minutes on foot from Gapyeong Station. The bridge, the river, and the blossoms all fit in one frame. Get there early in the morning and mist off the water gives you a completely different photo.

I'd aim to arrive before 9 a.m. Plenty of parking, and there's a dakgalbi place nearby.

2. Danyang, Chungbuk — Dodamsambong blossom path

People know Dodamsambong but not the blossom path around it. Rock formations, river, and cherry blossoms stack up in the same shot, and an hour disappears while you're taking pictures.

There's a 2km walking path along the river with a café partway for a break.

3. Namwon, Jeonbuk — Baemsagol entrance

I stumbled on this on the way to hike Jirisan. So this is what happens when a mountain valley meets cherry blossoms. Clean air, good sound of water. Mid-April is about right.

4. Hadong, Gyeongnam — the back road behind Hwagae Market

The Hwagae Ten-Ri blossom road is famous enough that traffic just stops. Cut around behind Hwagae Market and it's a different mood. Few cars, quiet, good for walking. There's traditional tea tasting nearby too.

5. Wonju, Gangwon — Hwanggol Valley, Chiaksan

Cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom together here, so the color is loud. Watching flowers with the valley water running is better than it sounds. Lots of families. Too cold for actual swimming, but dipping your feet is fine. My younger one refused to leave for thirty minutes and I had a hard time getting her out.

6. Andong, Gyeongbuk — around Woryeonggyo Bridge

The Woryeonggyo night view is well known, but pairing it with spring blossoms is another thing. Once the lights come on in the evening the whole place lifts. It's one of the few spots that works for night blossoms, so dinner in the jjimdak alley plus a walk wraps up a day cleanly.

7. Buyeo, Chungnam — Baengma River blossom path

Below Busosanseong, and it's peaceful. See some Baekje history, see some blossoms. Works with kids, works with just adults. On weekends there are Baekje Cultural Festival events attached.

8. Jeju — Noksan-ro, Jocheon-eup

Not the handful of places you'd think of for Jeju blossoms — this one. A narrow country road with a blossom tunnel forming over both sides. Drive it slowly in a rental, stop here and there, take your shots. It's a local drive route.

9. Ganghwa, Incheon — Ganghwa Nadeulgil Course 4

This is where you get sea and blossoms together. Walk from Chojidaegyo to Gwangseongbo with the West Sea beside you the whole way. It's a walking course, so shoes matter, and budget three hours.

10. Daejeon — Yuseong hot spring blossom path

Soak in the hot spring, come out, look at blossoms. Honestly I went back and forth on whether to include this one. The blossoms themselves are ordinary compared to the nine above. But for a one-night, two-day trip, nothing here is easier.

Worth knowing before you go

9 to 11 a.m. is the best window. Fewer people, softer light. From 5 to 7 p.m. the sunset shifts the colors, and night only works where there's lighting. Woryeonggyo, basically.

What to bring is obvious. Light jacket, comfortable sneakers, power bank. Mornings and evenings are still chilly, you walk more than you expect, and you'll take twice the photos you planned. A picnic mat and snacks are nice to have and fine to skip.

For photos, cleaning up the background gets you halfway. Avoid trash cans and crowds, kill the flash, use natural light. Shoot from above, below, and the side a few times and one of them will land. Petal close-ups come out surprisingly well.

Because it's over so fast

The blossoms are only up for a short stretch. Ten days or so. That's what makes it feel like a waste to miss, and why I keep obsessing over dates.
